what brand?

whatever brand you have, the maker also makes a cleaning kit for it. buy the kit, follow the directions.

l had a truck with a simular setup. What l did was to remove the air filter from the housing, & clean the filter with compressed air, from a air compressor. The question is, how do u know when it is clean? Well, in my case, l held the filter up to any light. & before l began, l could not see any light through the filter, Then l used the compressed air from the air compressor to clean the filter, entirely. l would check the filter often to see how much light l could see through it. It took me about a half hour to porperly clean the filter, so all light shown through the filter, evenly. Cleaning the outside, & the inside, if u have access to the inside of ur filter. Then, if u can get to the inside of ur filter shine the light inside of the filter as well. This gives u a complete cleaning of ur filter. Being that yours is non disposable, that generally means that it will last the life of the vehicle. Mine was non disposable as well, but l found a way to replace it with a new one. Even though the maker of the filter says non disposable, u just know that ie is not going to last forever. And as u probably r aware of, a dirty filter is not good for ur engine. l have found that u can clean the filter only so many times. Something has to be done. It is impossible for a filter to last forever. Age, & weather will break down a filter, in time. The pleated paper element inside of the filter is what catches the biggest amount of dirt, & other items that will eventually ruin a engine. It may take a long time, but the dirt & other items will kill a engine. For example. In the 1920 is most cars did not have any kind of air filter. The result was a engine that was ruined at 50,000 miles. l have seen many old cars in junkyards that ended up this way. l do not think a filter was standerd on a vehicle, until about 1932, & even then they were not the greatest. Full air filters did not start till about 1960. During the period of 1940 to the late 1950 is there was a item known as a oil bath air filter. Rather than the conventional pleated paper element, the oil bath had a substance quite simular to steel wool, packed into a round screen. This fit into the air filter housing, & served the same purpose of filtering out dirt & other items. Also included in this type of filter was a small amount of engine oil at the bottom of the filter housing. This also helped to catch the dirt & other items. You had to drain the oil out, every so often, & replace with clean oil. As to the steel wool type air filter, these could not really be cleaned, so when the time came, u just bought a new element. Hope this helps u some.

They make an oil to clean non-disposable air filters that is available at any auto parts store. Take it out and vacum 1st and then rub oil in which will not only repel dirt but clean out holes in fabric to clean. easy as that and not as complicated as above me answer.
