It is a marketing ploy to make Toyaota more desirable to younger 'hip' buyers.
The same cars they sell here as Scions were sold in Japan as Toyotas.

ummmm. Toyota. The xA & xB have been in Japan quite a bit longer before they were released in N. America. The tC was made here in N. America, by a Toyota plant, and to my knowledge has not ever been released in Japan. Why would you think that they were made by another company?

Toyota.
- The xA and original xB were based off the Toyota Echo and were all sold in Japan long before.
- The new xB and tC share a platform with a Toyota Avensis (sp?) which is sold in Europe and the powertrain with the 4 cylinder Camry.
- The xD is based off the Toyota Yaris.
- All Scions are built in Japan.

Same market gimmick that brought the Lexsucks in the USA. It is a Toyota Whatever, rebadged as Lexsucks XXXX so people that buys it do not feel like driving a Toyota. Imagine a rich guy buying a top of a line Camry with all the bells & whistles, same car but it does not sounds well in the Country Club that he bought a Toyota, sounds better a Lexsucks. Also it has a new company feel to it & if it does not pans out is Lexsucks & Scion fault not Toyota so their market name badge is not tarnish. Is that simple.
