and last night while at my friends house, one of his friends came in saying a ''scion tc is alarm was going off'' and we all went outside to find it going off, but my question is.. if l dont have the more equipped alarm system (just the standard one where the lights just flash) why would it be going off?

You probably accidentally pressed and held the red panic button on your scion tc key. That would probably be the only explanation because all it has is keyless entry, no alarm.
