Get a certifies used car u will get a better quality car & if it is certified the warranty will usually be better than the new car warranty was. VW has the best Certified pre-owned warranty (it is comprehensive not just powertrain) & if u go test drive a new scion then a used 05 Jetta u will be able to feel the build quality difference. look for an 04 or 05 GLS with about 25K miles for around $16000 the 05 would be my choice because u would have a year or two left on the 4 year 50K warranty & then the certified warranty will pick up for 2years 24K miles comprehensive. that should give u warranty coverage untill about 74K miles or 2011 which ever comes first.

l work as a valet manager so l drive about 100 cars 1-2 miles a day from cold & warm starts. The scion is a good car with the only complaints l hear often being that the mpg is not as good as advertised (more in the 22/28 city/hwy range). If l was buying a NEW wagon in that price range there is one model l would consider first. The Toyota matrix, which has a wagon model which retails for the same price (sometimes a little cheaper with rebate). Better mpg and, l think, a better ride. It will also hold value better in the long run & Toyota has more consistent production (less chance of getting a bum car out of a group). The downside: 1.8l instead of 2.4l engine. All that being said if u can find a certified Dodge Magnum below that price range, l do not care what anyone else might say, they're killer cars & should hold their value really well. All in all though, the Scion is a generally good buy.

Get a larger more upscale used car. A 1 yr old used car will be much cheaper than a new car and still have a warranty and low miles.

Edit: l am getting 30-35 mpg depending on the week and the wind.

As a 2007 Scion tC owner, l recommend you go with a nicer used car. Some cars l recommend:
• Acura CL
• Honda Accord EX V6
• Toyota Solara V6
• Nissan Altima (2nd gen)

We just bought a Xb, its a good buy. Like the answer above dont listen to the haters! l havent heard a valid gripe against the scions yet, mostly just people talking nasty. For some reason people like to slam these cars down. l tend to think that they are either narrow minded, or just jealous. Its a Toyota, you cant go wrong. If it is taken care of, like most other Toyotas it will run for a very long time.
